Aluminium and Light alloys
Surface preparation - Bare substrate

For the preparation of aluminium and light alloy surfaces, it is necessary to lightly shot blast or mechanically sand the surfaces in order to remove oxide layers which form on the surfaces on the metals when untreated. Degrease the surface with a neutral solvent before starting the coating application process. After this has been undertaken the substrate is then suitable for the application of the recommended coating system.

Previously coated surfaces - Topsides and below the waterline

If the existing coating is in good condition with no cracking, flaking loss adhesion from substrate, then it is suitable to thoroughly degrease and clean the surface, then abrade the old coatings with a medium-fine abrasive paper also removing dust from the substrate surfaces and follow up with a suitable undercoat and topcoat or antifouling. Some antifouling are not compatible with aluminium we recommended, if you are unsure whether an antifouling is compatible, Please contact us.

If the existing coating is in poor condition and is showing loss of adhesion to substrate, flaking, cracking, blisters, then it will be necessary to remove the old coatings by using a remover svernigraf or by sanding with a coarse abrasive paper 80-100 after this has taken place, apply the recommended coating system for bare substrates.
